Energy Trend
The trend in electricity prices is shown below and is a direct correlation with natural gas commodities. In Texas we produce most of our electricity using natural gas and this is why if you were to go look at natural gas futures prices you would see a similar up and down trend line that follows electric rates in Texas. As you can see this chart is updated as of September 2008 and shows you a years history of how far up and how far down electricity has come this year. You will need to add about 5 cents to the rate to get an approximate Texas residential electric rate. Part of the 5 cents represents pass through charges also called TDSP charges that are normally built into the rate already and part of the 5 cents is the cost of converting natural gas to electricity. This trend line is a historical chart showing what the price of electricity has done regardless of the energy provider you may have chosen. At the point in time on the chart you are looking at is about what a fixed electric rate was going for if you were to lock in at that time. You would need to add the 5 cents to the rate for pass through charges. Also if you were on a variable rate this chart may help answer some questions as to why your electric rate may have been high during the Texas summer of 2008.
